Women’s March Action Launches New Headquarters, Defend Democracy Campaign to Elect Pro-Choice Candidates

On the heels of the overturn of Roe v. Wade, Women’s March Action launches new 15-state campaign to elect pro-choice candidates and add more Democrats to the ballot box

LOS ANGELES, CA – JUNE 27, 2022 – Opening the doors to a new feminist future, the Women's March Action, the advocacy arm of the Women’s March Foundation, today opens new headquarters that will serve as a hub for feminist politics at a most urgent time in America.

In addition, on the heels of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, Women’s March Action is officially launching a Defend Democracy campaign to expand its purview beyond marches and California to elect pro-choice candidates across the country. The campaign is targeting 15 states and partnering with candidates, elected officials, and community-based organizations in efforts to add more Democrats to the ballot box and strengthen November elections and institutions against the extreme right wing trying to dismantle them.

“We must apply pressure using all tactics at our disposal and we must push back against forces dead set at eroding our Democracy with partisan gerrymandering, voter purges, and the outright denial of election results,” said Women’s March Action Executive Director Emiliana Guereca. “Marching is one important tactic, but it’s not enough. We must elect, fund and support candidates at the local, state and federal level who will unequivocally uphold a woman’s right to reproductive health.”

Defend Democracy Action is making a tangible impact by convening activists and organizers across the country, hosting events, contacting eligible voters and bringing communities together.  The advocacy organization’s wide-reaching efforts will add voters to the rolls nationwide with an eye toward the 2022 midterm elections. The new campaign leverages grassroots groups on the ground to register voters in their communities, with a focus on the 9 million who relocated during the pandemic across the top 15 states of interest and maximum opportunity to fight for the country, one voter at a time.

So far, Defend Democracy has:

  • Contacted over one million voters

  • Held over 350 events across the country

  • Brought together over 100 partner organizations

After four years of growth, hard work, and commitment, Women's March Action has become a central hub for activists working to elect pro-choice, pro-woman candidates to every level of public office. The advocacy organization has reached millions of voters and supported hundreds of candidates. The headquarters, which opened for business today in the Boyle Heights section of Los Angeles following a ribbon-cutting celebration over the weekend, will serve as a physical center of gravity for pro-equality activists and organizers to gather for phone banking, text banking, postcard writing, and retail shopping that supports vital issues. The goal of the new headquarters is to maintain this space as a consistent home for feminist politics in Los Angeles, where activists and organizers can leverage the space, resources and people power in the heart of the city, while the organization’s work extends to more than a dozen key states around the country.
